Axe & Root Homestead is finally sharing seeds from our own growing spaces (with free shipping)! I've been seed-saving for years and using my own stock in my gardens. In 2024, I grew more crops than ever and excess seeds were saved to share with other growers. These seeds were grown in my permaculture gardens, totally naturally, with zero additives, pesticides, or herbicides. Small batches are hand-harvested, dried and packaged here in central New Jersey.

About Florence Fennel

Sow seeds indoors ¼" deep 4-6 weeks before last frost. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Our plants reached 3-4 feet tall. Harvest the bulbs for eating before the plant flowers to avoid a woody texture.

Typical Germination: 10-15 days

Light: Part shade to full sun

Soil: Well draining, nutrient-rich

Height: 3-4' tall

Permaculture Uses

  • Fennel is said to repel fleas, hence the old saying, "Plant fennel by the kennel."
  • It's strong aroma makes this plant an excellent companion for cucumbers. Note that though fennel is said to be allelopathic and inhibits the growth of many other vegetable crops, I grew a few plants successfully next to tomatoes last season. The tomatoes did not appear to be negatively impacted.
  • The bulb, stalks, and fronds of fennel are all edible.
  • A cup of fennel tea is said to host many benefits including aiding in digestion, clearing the body of excess fluids and toxins, and more. Research is advised before using medicinally.
  • Fennel seeds can be saved and used as a cooking spice.
  • When allowed to flower, pollinators absolutely love fennel blossoms.
  • This is an excellent host-plant for swallowtail butterflies.
  • In warmer climates, fennel can be treated as a perennial, so long as the root remains intact.

Be sure to understand your own growing zone and microclimate before planting seeds. Research is advised on plant varieties, requirements, and specifications. After seeds arrive, refer back to this product listing for suggested sowing instructions. Instructions will not be shipped with seeds in an effort to save paper.

IMPORTANT:

Refunds will not be provided for ungerminated seeds. These seeds are used in my own personal garden and have been found to be viable. Please research seed sowing processes before purchasing as faulty sowing, user error, extreme weather conditions, or other factors resulting in poor germination rates are outside of our control. No exceptions.
